A single application for estimating snow water equivalent from a RADARSAT image

An ingenious method for estimating the spatial distribution of the snow water equivalent (SWE) was developed using Earth observation images from the Canadian RADARSAT satellite. VIASAT GeoTechnologies developed this new radar remote sensing application working with INRS-Eau, Terre et Environnement and Hydro-Québec.

The EQeau application calculates a water equivalent value for every pixel in a RADARSAT image captured during the snow accumulation season. EQeau is a new tool for mapping a SWE line over very wide areas of up to 250 000 km2. Designed by qualified technicians and hydrologists, EQeau contains a set of functions that water management specialists can exploit to get desired results in the statistical and map format they want, including a breakdown of SWE estimates for land units such as drainage basins.
