Inventory and Management of Land-based Infrastructures
and Equipment
The crisis of confidence surrounding financial information has led to tighter regulations for
major businesses that deploy, operate and manage network and equipment infrastructures in the
field (telecom, energy, transportation, municipal). This equipment represents assets that are
hard to evaluate from an accounting perspective unless an appropriate localized inventory is
available. Moreover, natural catastrophes such as the ice storm that hit Quebec in 1998 or the
hurricanes that succeeded one another in 2004 considerably damaged existing infrastructures.
This pinpointed the need to better understand the entire equipment pool, including its location,
so it can be rebuilt when the time comes. VIASAT has pioneered localized inventory solutions that
exploit mainly the GPS/GIS types of satellite positioning technology it has and whose software
components are developed and maintained entirely in-house.
